Healthcorp, training division of Device Technologies is proud to offer either full or half day Laser Safety training courses throughout Australia. The course content follows the recommendations of ASNZS4173:2004.

Who should undertake the course?

Suitable for persons wishing to operate class 3B or 4 lasers used in medicine and surgery, and other health care settings, who wish to take on laser safety officer roles. The course is approved for the purposes of obtaining a Queensland, Tasmanian or West Australian licence to use Class 3B or 4 lasers.

Laser Safety Officer Training (full day)

The lecturer will present a comprehensive programme that covers ALL surgical and cosmetic lasers and includes:

  • Physics and the operation of lasers
  • Interaction of laser radiation with tissue
  • Hazards of surgical lasers
  • Laser safety
  • The role of the laser operator/nurse Role and responsibilities of the LSO
  • Administrative controls, audits and checking credentials
  • Laser clarification and hazard area assessment
  • Australian Standards requirements
  • Relevant ACORN standards
  • Accident response

There are no pre-requisites for this Laser Safety Officer training course.  Students must be at least 17 years of age at the time of attendance.

Healthcorp’s Laser Safety course is available in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The face to face training is 8 hours and covers both theory and practical aspects of laser safety. Students are required to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the course commencement or will be refused entry.

The course includes the basic laser safety course in the morning, with an introductory laser safety officer extension in the afternoon. This will enable attendees of the whole day to also apply for LSO status where this is required.

A short answer written examination is conducted at the conclusion of each component of the course (i.e. 2 exams, one in the middle of the day and one at the end of the day). Certificates of completion will be emailed to graduates post course, enabling you to apply for a Laser Licence.

  • Generation of the laser beam and propagation of light.
  • Characteristics of the laser beam.
  • Properties of different types of lasers.
  • Optical pathways, delivery systems and applicators.
  • Laser controls, e.g. power/pulse/time settings, emergency control and delivery systems.

 

Laser hazards

  • Laser tissue interactions and how these vary with wavelength.
  • Particular hazards of delivery systems.
  • Ocular and skin hazards.
  • Patient-specific hazards.
  • Reflected beam hazards.
  • Laser plume hazards.

 

Principles and procedures for safe laser use

  • Standards, regulations and guidelines.
  • Eye protection and protective eyewear.
  • Laser controlled areas— warning signs, entry controls, control of access to the laser.
  • Requirements for laser safety in procedural rooms and operating theatres

 

Introduction to the Role of the Laser Safety Officer

  • Context of the LSO role
  • Role and functions of the LSO
  • Regulatory controls
  • Assessments of laser facilities
  • Laser classification and hazard analysis.
  • Advanced aspects of medical lasers and their delivery systems
  • Investigation and management of laser accidents/incidents.

 

Intense Pulsed Light sources (IPLs)

In addition, some information on the operation and safety of IPLs is included in the above courses at appropriate points.

Cost: Laser Safety Operator Training (full day) – $580.00 plus GST
